A compound light microscope is a microscope with more than one lens and its own light source. In this type of microscope, there are ocular lenses in the binocular eyepieces and objective lenses in a rotating nosepiece closer to the specimen. Although sometimes found as monocular with one ocular lens, the compound binocular microscope is more commonly used today. The first light microscope dates back to , when Zacharias Jansen created a compound microscope that used collapsing tubes and produced magnifications up to 9X. Microscopes have come a long way since then—today’s strongest compound microscopes have magnifying powers of 1, to 2,X. Because it contains its own light source in its base, a compound light microscope is also considered a bright field microscope. Bright field microscopy simply means that the specimen is lit from below and viewed from above. In order to ascertain the total magnification when viewing an image with a compound light microscope, take the power of the objective lens which is at 4x, 10x or 40x and multiply it by the power of the eyepiece which is typically 10x.

The recent establishment of a minimum age estimate of Tantalising excavated evidence found across northern Australian suggests that Australia too contains a wealth of ancient art. However, the dating of rock art itself remains the greatest obstacle to be addressed if the significance of Australian assemblages are to be recognised on the world stage. A recent archaeological project in the northwest Kimberley trialled three dating techniques in order to establish chronological markers for the proposed, regional, relative stylistic sequence.
Applications using optically-stimulated luminescence OSL provided nine minimum age estimates for fossilised mudwasp nests overlying a range of rock art styles, while Accelerator Mass Spectrometry radiocarbon AMS 14 C results provided an additional four. Results confirm that at least one phase of the northwest Kimberley rock art assemblage is Pleistocene in origin.
Further, our results demonstrate the inherent problems in relying solely on stylistic classifications to order rock art assemblages into temporal sequences. An earlier than expected minimum age estimate for one style and a maximum age estimate for another together illustrate that the Holocene Kimberley rock art sequence is likely to be far more complex than generally accepted with different styles produced contemporaneously well into the last few millennia. It is evident that reliance on techniques that produce minimum age estimates means that many more dating programs will need to be undertaken before the stylistic sequence can be securely dated.
Dating techniques: Illuminating the past.
While vertical erosion into bedrock landscapes has been extensively studied, there is little consensus on how rivers erode laterally in bedrock landscapes. It is crucial to establish the duration of lateral widening intervals that create bedrock valleys in order to understand how changes in river dynamics shape the Earth’s surface. Through a collaboration with the Desert Research Institute DRI , the PI will learn luminescence dating techniques that will allow her to establish the timing of lateral erosion intervals and apply these techniques to infer transport history of sediments.
Determining the timing of past and current river incision is important for predicting the effect of ongoing landscape change on humans who live and work near rivers in Kansas, the PI’s home state. The PI’s home institution, Kansas State University, will benefit from the professional development of the PI, her extended collaborative network with DRI, and the incorporation of dating techniques in research and teaching to demonstrate how local rivers change on decadal and centennial time scales that humans must be prepared to adapt to.

This collection contains the abstracts of the papers presented in the session entitled “Illuminated Communities: The Role of the Hearth at the Beginning of Andean Civilization,” at the 84th annual meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. Hearths, often the center of a home, reveal where people gathered, what they consumed, and what they valued. In many early Andean societies, hearths were also focal points of public ritual, placing them at the center of both family and community life during the first several millennia of social and political complexity.
This session broadly explores and compares the role that hearths—whether functioning as ceremonial, domestic, or straddling the line between the two—played in the lives of people dwelling in the Andes between the Middle Preceramic and Initial Periods BC— BC. It specifically emphasizes the creation, use, and social meanings of hearths during this period, including but also beyond the well-known Kotosh Religious Tradition.
Through this focus on the hearth as both a socio-spatial anchor of ancient activity and the principle unit of our analysis, the session aims to create a dialogue between scholars working across the Andes, and in so doing, reevaluate the role of the hearth at the dawn of Andean civilization. Published today in the journal Ecology and Evolution , the study may pave the way for scientists to better understand how plant communities — and possibly animals, bacteria, and fungi as well — will respond to human-caused climate change.
Packrats Neotoma spp. Their sticky, viscous urine helps the nests to bind together into a solid mass, capable of being preserved for tens of thousands of years — some nests even date to beyond the last ice age. These plant-rich deposits — called middens, which also can contain insects, bones, and other materials the packrats habitually collect — are found in arid parts of North America. Because the foraging range of these small rodents is limited, the contents of packrat middens represent the local environment at the time the material was gathered, providing clues about past climates and environments.
Since , more than 2, ancient packrat middens from western North America have been analyzed for fossil contents and archived. Because of their dense distribution, fossil middens in the Americas offer the chance to genetically profile entire communities through time and space, but first, we need to improve the way we analyze data from these deposits — the principal aim of this study. These two sites span the range of current climatic conditions across which North American packrat middens are preserved and have been studied.
The researchers explored the use of two next-generation sequencing techniques to compare the DNA: amplicon, during which the same gene is sequenced from every sample, and shotgun, which randomly selects DNA fragments to sequence. They decided to focus on the shotgun technique for this study, finding that packrat middens up to 32, years old contain recoverable DNA that is consistent with fossils found in these deposits.
As expected, a large portion of this DNA is bacterial, but between percent is classified as belonging to eukaryotic organisms — those whose cells have a nucleus — including plants like grasses, pines, junipers, daisies, and roses, as well as a small number of vertebrates, including insects and fungi. Viruses were also present in small quantities. Although this study underscores the promise of deep DNA sequencing to illuminate previous ecosystems, a great deal of progress is required to make the work more accurate.
Illuminating the past
The paintings were first reported by the explorer Joseph Bradshaw Because they are unusual and the details are unique there has been some speculation as to their origin. And because these paintings have no direct connection with the traditional owners of the land they have not been retouched as part of tribal ceremonies as is often the case.
They are deteriorating as the rock substrate ages and organic binders and pigments oxidize and polymerize, which demands that some conservation measures be initiated for their preservation for future generations. The rock art paintings illuminate the twin aims of this book: the use of archaeometry to determine the age, and perhaps some of the forensic details about the artefacts under examination; and the use of scientific techniques of analysis to determine the most appropriate strategy for their conservation.

They found DNA from humans who swore oaths on its pages and from bacteria likely originating on the hands and mouths of those humans. Best of all though, they found 1,year-old DNA from the cows and sheep whose skin became the parchment on which the book is written.
Remarkably, the authors say they extracted all this DNA without destroying even a tiny piece of parchment. All they needed were the crumbs from rubbing the book with erasers, which conservationists routinely use to clean manuscripts.
